Poor Treble

Have you guys seen this upsurge in body positive music lately? And by upsurge, I mean two in the past six months. And by body positive, I mean women who aren't exactly large saying stuff about being bigger. Whatever, that's cool, and it's relatively nice. Even if it's halfhearted at the best.
Now, with these two songs ("All About That Bass" by Meghan Trainor, and "Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj), there is a new wave of people yelling BUT WHAT ABOUT SKINNY-SHAMING all over the place. I mean, yeah, both of these songs have lines akin to the whole, "Real women have curves" thing, but let's be real here.
People are using these songs as base camp for their panic, since they're clearly new to body positivity that comes at their expense. Never mind the fact that so much of this movement is comprised of women with hourglass figures and flat bellies. Never mind the fact that, to the media, plus-size starts at a size six and ends at fourteen—maybe sixteen if you're hot. I'm absolutely not saying that these people aren't necessarily plus, that they're not allowed to sit with us. I'm also not saying that they don't or can't belong in a movement about body positivity—I'm saying that I can't stand that the public face of this important movement looks nothing like the people struggling.
Because of this, people see this movement as nothing more than slightly bigger women telling skinny women that they are just the worst and that "boys like a little more booty to hold at night."
I mean, let's all ignore the fact that fat discrimination is pretty much a constant in our society. Let's forget that obesity is considered a disease by the AMA; that people have been refused medical care simply for being fat; that fat people are not only less likely to get hired, but also less likely to receive raises and promotions. Let's ignore every second of that, of a world that I can barely fit in sometimes, of being told I'm pretty "for a fat girl," of a six billion dollar industry designed to get rid of me. Let's forget about all of that and focus on these two songs that made fun of skinny women.
Right.
Okay.
I feel like we're starting to hit a place where we can make some real, genuine changes that don't come at the expense of other people, and we could do so much if we only let people who were actually fat (as opposed women like Meghan Trainor) speak out.
And please remember: skinny-shaming is a bad thing, and I've written on that before. It's damaging to fat acceptance as a movement, because shaming someone cause of their body type is pretty much the literal exact opposite of what we're trying to do. Just don't do the thing. But the most important thing to take away from this is the skinny-shaming does NOT equal fat discrimination, in any world, ever.
Finally: I am cute.
Ah, the involvement fair. Ah, bio club.

I Keep Doing This

Sorry about this, guys! I'm hopefully going to get back into the habit soon, especially now that I'm in a new (really cute) dorm, and now that I have this skirt currently on its way to me.
Till I manage to get myself together enough to take pictures, here are a couple older, undocumented outfits that I really love!
Ah, San Diego. Always so good to me.
Dress: Forever 21 (I definitely need more pictures in this beauty) | Flannel shirt: thrifted | Tights: Walmart | Shoes: Vans | Sunglasses: Charming Charlie | Backpack: Forever 21
Fun house portraits count, don't they?

Shiny Shoes

These pictures are from last month's trip to Carlsbad, but that's cool, right? I've worn this outfit a few times since then, really, except for the shoes. Those fell apart the day after I took these pictures. I'm still heartbroken. I need more copper sandals!

Best Kind of Party

I'll be the first to admit that the best kind of party is a pizza party. The second best is definitely a pattern party. This is one of those combinations that would make my mom shake her head and call me absurd or something, and let me tell you, it's one of those combinations that I'm kind of really fond of. It's both girly and gentlemanly, and it's a little ridiculous. And we all know that I like the ridiculous. I mean, look at the title of this blog!
I know I'm getting really out of practice with the ways of the OOTD, to the point where I am honestly having a bit of trouble figuring out cute, new outfits with all of my existing stuff. So bear with me as I sort of feel my way back into something like regular blogging, okay? I'm trying, guys, I promise.

And, yes, I'm still trying to get used to using a tripod. It's a work in progress. That's a thing. Also, I've just noticed what out cats have done to the screen of that window. Pests.

Saddle Shoes of Death

So it turns out that I'm really bad at posting every day. Or regularly at all. These are things we all learn.
I finally went out and took pictures, though, which I count as a victory. There were people down the street, and they could see me taking pictures of myself with my tripod and everything. But I persevered.
It's a little silly that I haven't taken a picture of this outfit yet, considering how often I wear it and how much I like it. But then, I haven't taken many pictures of outfits at all in the past few months. Sorry about that. I am still on various places on the internet, though! It's amazing how much time a person can spend sleeping, or knitting, or playing Portal. I am perpetually amazed.
How has your year been so far?

Please, someome tell my hair to stop doing what it's doing and
just cooperate.

And I am so, so, so behind on all of my bog reading. I know how I'm gonna spend the next week! I miss you all dearly, and I need to actually stay caught up on stuff.

The Day After Finals

I'm finally done with the semester and finally back home, and it's nice. To celebrate, I slept in until two. And to continue celebrating, I wore my favorite sweater.

It's good to be back, guys. And that's something I'll celebrate by scaring myself silly with Bioshock.

Nautical Nonsense

Hooray, it's another incredibly late Marvelous Monday post! Still not on a Monday! Yeah!
The theme: nautical.
Now, let's be real here: I love everything to do with water. Every single thing. The proudest moment of my life was driving a pontoon boat on Convict Lake in Mammoth. (Which reminds me that I still have a ton of Mammoth pictures to post. Whoops.)
Best day ever.
As such, I'm a sucker for nautical fashion. I've been wearing that striped dress to death lately, and now, you can see it in nautical action. I really ought to have pictures of me in something else one of these days. It's getting a little weird. I'm also incredibly disappointed that I forgot my anchor earrings, but oh well.

Oh, Pablo

It's another super late Marvelous Monday post on a day that's not Monday!
Sheesh.
This theme is celebrity-inspired.
Now, I don't live under a rock. As you can tell, I live in a pretty nice dorm with five other people. There are very few rocks even in sight, and I don't live under any of them. Thus, I know abut modern celebrities. More importantly, I know that quite a few of them have some rad style. I don't really care about Taylor Swift's music, but I do care about her closet. Same goes for Kim Kardashian and...whatever she does, and her closet. I don't care, but I'm aware.
All of this is to say that I totally know about modern celebrities, even though I'm channeling Pablo Picasso today. And why wouldn't I? He's one of the most well-known painters in history, he was friends with Jacques Cousteau, and he could do stripes like no one else. I mean, look at this guy:
I just got dressed to get some breakfast at the cafe, but let me tell you, dressing up with one of my favorite artists in mind totally helped make the morning trek a little more bearable.
I promise I wore shoes today. I really did.

Over the Top

So, wow, I am really, really, really behind on Marvelous Mondays. I formally apologize, and offer up this post on a Wednesday. I'm going to do them all this week, and hopefully one day I'll get a shot outside! I think we all fail to understand just how gorgeous my campus is.
The first theme I'm behind on is Over the Top. While I'm occasionally a bit of an obnoxious dresser, I generally tend towards more simplistic looks. I think I'm turning into a minimalist. I wore this obnoxious pattern party with much more low-key accessories. I was so excited when I woke up this morning and it was cold outside! I've been waiting to wear this sweater since I put it away for the summer.

Sweater, collared top, dangly earrings: Forever 21 | Dress (worn underneath): Image | Leggings: WalMart | Boots: Forever | Cuff: Vintage | Headband: Christmas present | Necklace: Claire's | Studs (worn later): Mudd
And my mom sent Halloween decorations in her last care package! While we haven't gotten around to hanging up some of the cooler ones yet, we have started decorating. One of my roommates even brought these cool Olvera Street guys to hang out with some leaves and stuff.
And finally, I wrote a short article about my love of biology and the importance of education for a local environmental group. Maybe go check it out?

Prodigal Blogger

I'm sorry it's been so long! I've admittedly been to shy to take photos of my outfits, even though they've been some decent outfits. I'm just neurotic. But I promise to get caught up on my Marvelous Monday outfits soon! Like, by next Monday. Expect some catch-up posts.
For now, here's what I wore today. Nothing particularly special, as this is how I've been dressing all semester thus far, but I finally got over myself and took pictures in the living room/kitchen.
As a quick aside, the semester's going pretty well! I like my classes, I like my suitemates, and I recently got into NBC'S Hannibal. My life is a good one.

Pretty Simple

It's Marvelous Monday again, guys! It's also my first at the university, so that's pretty rad as well. Though I was a bit too cowardly to go beyond the hallway; I did have to tell my roommate was going on, vaguely. So there's that. Eventually, I'll venture onto the beautiful campus.
Maybe.
Let's hope.
Anyway, today I just had a couple of classes, which was pretty nice. I like my chemistry teacher well enough, but my history teacher is fantastic! I'm going to like this semester, I think.
This week's theme: minimalism!
To me, minimalism is just simplicity. Clean lines, simple colour palettes, very few accessories, stuff like that. I went for a monochromatic outfit with a pop of colour (purple lipstick you can barely see in the photo, just how I like it), and a splash of weird.
What better way to introduce myself to strangers than in  my eye shoes? Now all I'm missing is my heart sweater...

Now, let's go see how the others did simplicity!

Dinner and a Movie

Welcome to another Marvelous Monday! Actually, this was taken last Tuesday, but it's still Marvelous Monday. In real life, I'm actually wandering the High Sierras. Again.
This week's theme: date night!
I like really easy dates, honestly. Things like walking around in the late afternoon, drinking cool soda, and joking around like idiots. But with nice little additions, like holding hands. As such, I normally wouldn't wear heels on a date, unless they were fairly chunky and low. I mean, I have to be able to walk, right? But these heels Dani sent me were just so lovely, and they thus shaped my entire outfit.

Line forms on the left, gentlemen.

Fun fact: I actually fell over while wearing these heels and
looking at myself in the mirror. Proof of just how bad I am at
high heels.
Top: Ross | Skirt: mom | Earrings, heels: Forever 21 | Sunglasses, bag: Claire's | Bangles: Charming Charlie | Barrette: vintage
And now, I'd suggest paying a visit to the others to see how they dress up for dinner, movies, walking, or whatever it is when they date people.

Lace

Whoops, I'm a day late with this week's Marvelous Monday! Sorry 'bout that!
Anyway, this week's theme: lace!
Let's just talk about how much I love this blouse, and how pretty it makes any outfit. I'm not sure if it's the snazzy flower detail, or the flutter sleeves, or the black itself, but it just makes me feel so pointlessly fancy. Or witchy. Really, it can go either way, and I'm happy with both.
I've been playing around a bit more with my tripod, and while I'm still having trouble with it, it's been pretty fun. I just have to figure out how to get those detail shots of necklaces and shoes and stuff. That bit's more than a little tricky. Any tips, dedicated tripod users?

Top: Ross | Skirt: mom | Necklace: Forever 21 | Bangles: vintage | Sunglasses: Tilly's | Flats: Payless
And now, I suggest that we all head over to the others' blogs and find out what kinds of pretty, lacy looks they've come up with.

Tripod

So I found myself with a bit of money (oh, jury duty, you were so good to me) and I finally got a tripod for my camera. It was fourteen dollars at WalMart, and excepting the fact that I'm pretty inept with it, I'm happy with it. It's a Targus, and it extends to 42 inches, which is perfect for full outfit shots (we can have vertical pictures, oh happy day!), but a bit tricky for detail shots. I blame the height, though; it's really just me.
I played around with it a bit on my porch earlier, and I'm sure that I'll get the hang of it eventually!
Probably.

Wherever that bruise came from, it kinda hurts.

Not the focus I intended, but kinda cool all the same.

Kind of Obnoxious

Welcome back, dear readers, to yet another Marvelous Monday!
This week's theme: neon!
I don't know if this will come as a surprise or not, but I don't own any neon clothes. I know, it's shocking, right? Well, I do have some neon accessories, and I wore a couple of them with a simple black and white dress for extra impact.
That fantastic, aggressively neon bag is a Nine West bag my mom and I found in Ross last December. I loved it so much that my mom ended up getting it that day and then giving it to me as a Christmas present. Considering the fact that it's Nine West, it was dirt cheap, and an amazing find.
The necklace has a much less interesting story. It was a dollar from Forever 21.
And I have to apologise for the state of my room. Half of it is dominated by Kittentopia (which, unfortunately, will be dismantled toward the end of the week, as we're starting to find homes for them), and the other half by boxes. That whole moving thing is starting to get pretty real, and I'm so incredibly excited. And on top of that, I'm starting to get things together for our upcoming family vacation. Things are a bit more frenetic than usual, and it's manifesting as a mess in my room.
I've also started getting into painting. While I don't paint faithful representations of the fake daisies on our dining table, it is a lot of fun for me. I'm planning on painting and embroidering a bunch of stupid things and putting them on the walls of my room in the dorm.
And then, I did something crazy a couple of days ago: I sent a query letter to a literary agent. We'll see where that goes, if anywhere.
Finally, I've started speaking to some of my suitemates. It's weird to start thinking of them as real people I'll be living with for sixteen weeks, rather than blank entities I'll live with eventually, in the vaguely distant future. I don't mind it, actually. And at least one of them has a face, as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway, enough of that. How about some clothes and paintings? Yeah.

I want this in the kitchen. I hope my roommates aren't put off
by that.

My favourite quote.

Some of my things and an AWESOME present
from Dani.
Now that you've experienced my babbling and wild mess, go cast your eyes in the direction of the others!
