Transluscent

Anyway, it's another Marvelous Monday! I know! If you don't know what that is, go right here and learn.
This week's theme: sheer tops.
I have a handful, actually. Those great collared tops I wear? All sheer. At least vaguely so. I usually wear camisoles underneath, but I've recently discovered just how much I love layering. I was going to layer one of those tops under this dress, but then I remembered Sian's outfit from a recent Marvelous Monday. More specifically, the top. I've worn it before, as you all know, but I guess I've forgotten all about it.
Either way, this is what I wore to get citrus fruits and a mocha that wasn't really a mocha at all. There was caramel on it. I don't trust people who like caramel; they seem shifty.

Now, go check out the others' looks. I'm sure they are utterly fantastic, as always.

Good Coats and Denim Shirts

Pinterest is such a great source of style inspiration. There's a whole bevy of gorgeous outfit photos and items to drool over that you can't quite get from blogs alone. It's amazing!
But it's like subscribing to a bunch of fashion magazines in that it's a double-sided coin. On one side, you can just bask in the inspiration, beautiful and ordinary and any combination of the two. On the other, you're faced with pictures that almost always feature pretty, skinny girls in those pretty clothes you want.
Usually, I'm able to admire the look on whoever's wearing it, think about how it would look on my own fat body, and I'm content. I know that I can pull off nearly everything (except for surplice necklines and deeeeep Vs on swimsuits. I just can't). But I saw this gorgeous look and immediately thought, This would look better on me if I was skinny.
There is no escaping this mode of thought, it seems. You can fill your life with dozens of fantastic fatshion blogs, troll hundreds of sites selling amazing plus size clothes, all of that and still be faced with thoughts like that. You can be confident about your body 99% of the time, but that last percent can be crippling.
I don't dislike skinny people for being better able to pull off the parkas and trenches I don't think I can't pull off—that's ridiculous and counterproductive. I don't even particularly dislike major clothing brands for not selling clothes above, say, a size 14 (or 16, or 18, or 20). I just don't like that there still aren't enough companies who understand that fat girls want great clothes too! I love the many plus size companies whose sites I peruse almost daily. I really love those companies that offer both straight- and plus-size clothes. I really, really love those companies that offer extended sizes. On and on, I can be very enthusiastic about the lot of them.
I dunno, I just really wish that there were more great outfits like this on the internet for fat girls, or that there was more opportunity for great outfits like this.
If you don't follow me on Pinterest, then you don't know that I actually have two separate fashion boards. One devoted strictly to fatshion, the other for style in general. The general one features skinny girls almost exclusively, but that's because of one thing: I don't really like to double pin. So all of the fantastic fat girl fashions go to the other board. I'm torn about it because, on the one hand, I really want to showcase one in its own right, and on the other, I feel like the floor of Forever 21: I offer it all, but not together.
Blah, there is no right way to go about it.

Mall Style

I saw a girl at the mall the other day with style I really admired. Purple lipstick, flawless eyeliner, a jacket I would have sold my soul for—the whole shebang. I feel like there isn't much original style where I live, especially in the plus size community, and I thought it was awesome that her outfit was so freaking cool.
I was tempted to take her picture before realising a couple of things: I can barely talk to people (I did manage to compliment the jacket, though), this blog is not one for street style, and I don't want to do street style.
I like street style, a lot. There are so many interesting people out there dressing in such interesting ways, and I love being able to see it. I've seen some great sites with plus size street style as well (The Manfattan Project is awesome), which just makes my heart go all aflutter.
Some days, I'd really like to try my hand at it, just give local girls with style I admire a bit of a spotlight, but then I decide that, nah, I barely even take pictures of myself anymore.
We'll see where this blog takes me, if anywhere at all.
And that, guys, was a long and drawn-out way of saying that I saw a girl at the mall with a really cool outfit.

Wandering Spirit

It isn't a secret that I'm continually under the influence of wanderlust. I'm generally a bit restless, and crave few things the way I crave travel. I love going to new places and everything that that entails, but I genuinely love the actual traveling process. Packing things and that middle part between Point A and Point B—it's wonderful! But there's so much to be said for the destinations as well.
See, I'm generally very content, but I'm never quite complacent. Like I said, restless. And the trouble with family vacations is that it just feels like trying to quench your thirst with a milkshake rather than water. It works for about ten minutes, but then you're thirstier than before and things are just plain problematic.
I dunno, I just need a proper adventure. I'm going to hoard my money like a crazy dragon and hope for something around, say, December. Maybe. It's a good goal to aspire to, right?
Does anyone else get super restless like this?

Going White

It's Monday again, and it's time to make it marvelous, yo. Run right over here if you're new to the wonderful world of Marvelous Mondays and learn to enjoy this.
This week's theme: an outfit inspired by a piece of art.
I didn't do much today, just a bit of shopping with my mom, though I did come away with a cool new backpack and new wallet (finally). Either way, I chose something fairly simple to emulate this gorgeous painting.

Sorry about the blurriness.

An Ode: Stripes for Days

While searching for my fairly absurd inspirational pictures for my last Marvelous Monday post, I came across a lot of reasons to love horizontal stripes.
I mean, come on, they're so classic and wonderful and good.
So, here. Enjoy this random compilation of pictures where horizontal stripes are wonderful.
EDIT:Now with added bonus stories, as requested by Therese.*
Ivan was voted Most Likely to Set Fire
with That Smolder while in the navy.

The higher the hair, the closer to God; the
better the stripes, the closer to perfection.

These are vertical, but I don't care,
she is always too adorable for words.

Picasso didn't always paint Icarus metaphors;
sometimes, he just painted divers.

Why stand around and look adequate
when you can stand around and look
amazing by adding stripes?

Creative Pursuits

So I've set up yet another blog, but this one is strictly for writing. Inspiration, nonsense about my process (what process?), stuff like that. If it has to do with me writing things, it will be here. Just throwing out a heads-up.
That is all.
Continue about your lives now.

College Kid

I've been in the college game for, what, three years? Well, the community college game. It's not as glamorous or full of hijinks as Community would lead one to believe. It's lame.
In high school, they told us that we could go to community college for two years, knocking out our gen-eds close to home and saving a ton of money. I know that I've saved thousands upon thousands by doing just that, but honestly, if I'd had the opportunity to go straight to university out of high school, I would have.
It's taken me three years of commuting, taking classes that I didn't want to take (hello, Sociology 101), and waiting around, but I'm finally heading off into a proper collegiate wonderland in August. Definitely expect lots of enthusiasm and stuff about decorating my dorm room (yes, I'll be moving into a dorm; yes, I'm stoked) and things like that.
But that wasn't the point of this.
Right, I've been going to community college for three years, and one of those years has been spent waiting. I'm not working on my major, or toward transfer units (I got all of those done in two years, with the exception of one class I had to take over the summer because my critical thinking class did not count as a critical thinking class), or anything. Last semester, I took drawing and Italian because they seemed fun. This semester, I'm taking a class on evolution, astronomy, and geology because I freaking love science.
I'm not the only one who's had trouble with the whole two-years-and-you're-good issue, either. Two of my friends, one of whom doesn't even attend the same school, are still working toward their transfer units. And, while a lot of my friends are having that problem, they're the most directly relevant because we talk about this stuff, okay?
Just know that if you are a high school kid looking at college, community college is a good choice. A really good choice. Just know that it will almost certainly take more than those two years you were promised. I'm not sure if I just had trouble, but I found out that you can't even apply to a school without all of those units down, and you have to apply a full year ahead. That is what's going to get you.
Just smile, work as hard as you can to get done, and take advantage of cheap for-fun classes while you wait, is all I'm saying. That's my take-away, and it ought to be yours too.

Rebel Rebel

In case you haven't paid as much attention as you normally should through the week, it's Monday. But you should also know by now that Mondays around here are marvelous. If you didn't know this, head right over here and change that.
This week's theme: breaking fashion rules!
I'm sure I do this all the time, because let's face it, most fashion rules are straight-up silly. They're too constricting, whether or not you're a fat girl, and they're not much fun.
I mean, come on—don't wear horizontal stripes? That's absurd! I am a strong supporter of the horizontal striped look because you can look like an Elvis Presley-type jailbird, a pirate, or a sailor. Or all three at the same time! What's not to love about horizontal stripes?
Of course, the reasoning behind this is that they make you look bigger. Which is silly. Just as silly as clothes that are designed to "flatter" and "conceal trouble areas." Because that toga-like tee-shirt is going to fool everyone into thinking I'm a size two, I'd imagine.
I'm also pretty sure that one of the fat-girl fashion rules is that we shouldn't wear short skirts, but my new slogan may just become "Short skirts fo' life, yo." It just feels right.
So, hopefully, I've broken two rules with this one amazing dress. I absolutely love it and can't believe I haven't worn it yet. Though, truth be told, I actually wore it out into the world yesterday, where I was accosted by wind. Not fun. No, today was spent baking a cake and some cupcakes for Casey's birthday, and I did all of that in my pajamas.

I love low backs like this, I really, really do.

Hooray, Dolphins!

Just kidding, dolphins are mean. They're straight-up bullies. The irony here, though, is that once I'm done with my paperwork and giving my school all my money (ouch), I'll be a Dolphin. The capitalization matters here, as I've come to learn that Dolphins are much nicer than dolphins.
I went to an event at the school I'm transferring to, accompanied by my mom, aunt, and uncle. It was sort of a tour, sort of a bunch of workshops, and sort of wonderful. It's an absolutely beautiful campus, and they have a fantastic science program, and the library. It's gorgeous.
I'm just very excited, okay?
We ended up exploring quite a lot, checking out the dorms I'll be staying at, and buying lots of stuff with school spirit. I feel a bit bad that I don't have anything school-spirit-y from my current school, unless you count school ID, but whatever. I can draw a cougar on something if I feel the need for community college spirit.
Also, I ended up accidentally matching my sunglasses to my sweater, and I really liked that.
Finally, I forgot to take pictures on campus (oops), but I'll be going back in June, and I'm sure obsessive picture-taking will be enforced.

No one in my family would let me leave the bookstore without buying at least one thing, so I got three. Ha.

Just a Bit Shady

Casey and I wandered all around town on Thursday. We each got a haircut (I desperately needed a trim), talked to someone about maybepossiblyhopefully getting a job (how many appendages can I cross at once?), and did our usual farmer's market thing. Just with more delicious tacos from our usual papusa place.
We did discover this mini mall, which was finally open when we were around, and decided to check it out. There are shops in the absolute very front, but once you pass that little area, it's absolutely deserted, and maybe more than a bit creepy. I love it, though. I love places like that are maybe a bit shady, perhaps a bit grotty, and full of mediocre-quality things that are only a dollar.

Dust Bowl

Marvelous Monday is here!
If you're not sure what that is, then pay a visit right here and educate yourself, yo.
This week's theme: maxi skirts or dresses!
You know how I totally play favourites with items of clothing? Today was no exception. I love this skirt.  I paired it with boots and a jacket, effectively covering most of my body and keeping me safe from this ridiculous dust storm my town's been caught in. It's absurdly windy, and everything smells like dirt, and you can barely see for all the dust outside. It's like a brown fog, but more...particulate.
My mom and I braved the Dust Bowl-like outside world to get groceries. In the brief minutes between house and car, it already felt like I was coated in the stuff.
Not pleasant.
Hopefully, the others have had nicer weather.

Charlie likes to roll all over the floor to get my attention.
Needy.
Just kidding, I love her.

And now you should go pay a visit to the others, because I'm sure you're as curious about how they styled their maxi things as I am.

Lust List: Adventure Gear

I'm overly excited about going to Sedona next month, and so is my mom. Well, mostly, she's excited about maxi dresses. I, however, just want a bunch of sundresses and boots with good traction and backpacks. That's my ideal adventure gear. I mean, I wore a dress in Yellowstone. Skirts don't alter my Girl Scout abilities.
Don't worry, though, I also plan on sneakers and shorts and tee-shirts. And that cool coral tee with the studs? I may just try my hand at DIYing that.
Truth be told, though? I probably won't get much of a chance at hiking or anything, but I'm excited nonetheless. I've been to Arizona, but never to Sedona. I hear it's really cool, though.
I dunno, I think I'm just getting a bit stir-crazy.

On Loop

Sometimes (okay, all the time), I find songs that I really like and listen to them until no one in the vicinity can stand me.
Can't stop, won't stop.

Breakfast Burritos and Naps

Guess what, guys: it's Monday! Awww yeah. It's marvelous.
Our philosophy is this: Monday is nobody's favourite day of the week, but maybe its terrible reputation is a little undeserved. We're on a mission to make ours (and hopefully yours) a little less awful by dressing marvelously!
This week's theme: something we have trouble styling.
I have a whole bunch of things in my closet and dresser that I don't wear much anymore, unfortunately. Tops, sweaters, leggings. A lot of leggings. I'm really not one for them anymore. But when I pulled out this denim dress, I knew that the leggings would come out of hiding. I have trouble trying to find a way to wear them in a way that I like, and that fits my current aesthetic, and I think it totally worked out.
It's all cause of the boots, man.
This is what I wore to get up way too early to run errands with my mom after my rotten cat woke me up at 3:51 in the morning by climbing on a panel of fabric on my wall. Le sigh.
It was worth it, though—I got a breakfast burrito, and then I came home and took a nap.
This is my spring break, and I'm so okay with that.
